The Experience

Axe throwing looks simple until you stand at the line with an axe in your hand. There are no sights or complicated controls — just you, the axe, the target and the technique you are about to learn.

This is not a quick 'have a go and throw' session. Reboot Active's beginner experience is built around coaching, improvement and progression. You start with professional angel throwing axes while the instructor helps you find the right power, grip and release for your own movement. From there you learn to manage spin, improve accuracy and make the axe stick more consistently before moving into scoring rounds, team competition, trick shots and, when ready, heavier tomahawk axes.

Because success is not guaranteed on the first attempt, improvement becomes part of the fun. The first clean stick can create one of the loudest celebrations of the day — the Reboot 'YES!' moment. For many participants, the challenge of getting a little better each throw is exactly what makes the experience so compelling.

The Reboot Difference

You may recognise the activity. What we do is different.

Coach the First Stick

This is not ‘pick up an axe and hope’. Start with power, grip, release and spin so the first clean stick comes from learning rather than luck.

Choose the Next Challenge

After the core technique is working, participants can choose whether to try trick shots, multiple-axe variations or heavier tomahawks rather than being pushed through a fixed ladder.

Use the Moment, Not a Lecture

If someone arrives saying ‘I’m going to be rubbish at this’ and then improves, that real moment can open a useful conversation about expectations, confidence and trying unfamiliar things.

Chase the YES! Moment

The first clean stick is a visible breakthrough. Repeated attempts, small adjustments and the celebration that follows make improvement part of the experience itself.

Keep Everyone in the Game

Scoring, team competition, encouragement and informal coaching keep people involved between turns instead of reducing the session to one person throwing while everyone else waits.

Ways To Take Part

There’s more than one way to take part

You don’t have to do everything to be part of everything.

Many Reboot Active experiences offer different ways to contribute, support, observe and participate, so individuals can choose an appropriate level of involvement.

Throw & Progress

Learn the core technique with angel axes, work on power, grip, spin and accuracy, then progress into games, trick shots and tomahawks at a pace that feels right for you.

Choose Your Challenge

Everyone is encouraged to have a go, but participation remains choice-led. After learning the basics, choose which optional trick shots and axe types you want to attempt and step back from elements that are not right for you.

Compete & Encourage

When it is not your turn to throw, stay part of the action by following the scores, encouraging teammates and sharing the competitive energy of the session.

Perfect For .  . .

Axe Throwing – Beginner is a strong Start Activity for teams who want something unusual, memorable and competitive without needing previous experience. It works particularly well for company away days, team socials, reward events and groups looking for a shared challenge where progress is easy to see and celebrate.

It can also work as an accessible first step into the wider Reboot progression journey. Participants can build confidence in an unfamiliar activity before choosing whether to progress into more advanced axe throwing, other skill-based challenges or higher-stretch experiences later.

Team Value

What this experience can create opportunities for

Axe throwing is first and foremost a shared experience, but the way people learn it can create useful team moments. Participants watch one another improve, celebrate breakthrough throws and often begin encouraging or informally coaching each other between turns. Team competition can keep everyone engaged even when they are not at the throwing line.

The activity can also create opportunities to practise persistence, respond to feedback and experience visible improvement after repeated attempts. In a development-led version of the session, those moments can be used as a light-touch bridge into conversations about confidence, expectations and how people respond when they are not immediately good at something.

What it can Reveal

What people may naturally notice while doing it

One of the most interesting things about beginner axe throwing is how quickly self-talk can become visible. Reboot Active instructors regularly hear adults say things such as, 'I know I'm going to be rubbish at this,' before they have thrown their first axe.

In a development-led session, that moment can become a useful reflection prompt: where else do we judge ourselves before we have started? How do expectations, nerves or fear of getting something wrong show up in meetings, presentations or unfamiliar workplace challenges? The aim is not to force a lesson onto the activity, but to use real moments from the experience when they are relevant to the team.
