Catamaran Canoeing

Our Most Inclusive True Outdoor Team Activity

Inclusive. Shared. Energising. Great Fun.

Catamaran Canoeing is our most inclusive true outdoor team activity — and one of the strongest places to start a Reboot journey. Exceptionally stable shared canoes, coached paddling and a real journey through Bristol's Floating Harbour make teamwork visible from the first stroke, with races and lively water games ready when the group wants more.

The Experience

We consider Catamaran Canoeing our most inclusive true outdoor team activity — and one of the strongest places to start a Reboot journey. We have delivered it with participants across a wide range of ages, abilities and personalities, including people with disabilities. Individual access needs are always discussed in advance so we can confirm the right setup.

The craft itself makes teamwork visible. Each boat is exceptionally stable, but it still responds immediately to what the crew does. If paddlers stop working together, timing slips or different people pull in different directions, the boat tells you. Crews need to communicate, coordinate and find a shared rhythm; captains steer and make the calls, and those roles can rotate so quieter voices or people who do not normally lead can take charge for a while.

After a coached introduction, crews build confidence through early coordination tasks before heading out across Bristol's Floating Harbour. The journey gives the activity a real sense of purpose and progression: participants are not simply doing drills on the spot; they are learning enough to move through a real environment together.

As confidence builds, so can the energy. Races introduce friendly competition, while Canoe Polo or Canoe Basketball turn the final part of the session into a lively team challenge where paddling, throwing, catching, quick decisions and plenty of laughter collide. And if a captain is not making the cut, the crew may need to speak up, change the plan and stage a perfectly good-natured uprising.

Taking part does not have to mean paddling every stroke. Where the group setup, conditions and instructor judgement allow, the stable catamaran format can support passenger roles as well as game, media and shore-side ways to stay part of the shared experience. That flexibility is a big part of why we rate this so highly for mixed teams.

It works brilliantly as a social away-day activity in its own right, while the same structure can create useful moments around communication, leadership, coordination, confidence, decision-making and how a team responds when the first plan is not working.

The Reboot Difference

You may recognise the activity. What we do is different.

Start Stable, Build Confidence

Begin in stable catamaran canoes with guided basics so people with no previous paddling experience have a more approachable route onto the water.

Make the Journey Part of It

The experience is not confined to a static exercise area. A guided journey through Bristol's Floating Harbour gives the team a real shared adventure between the challenges.

Finish With Controlled Chaos

Races, Canoe Polo and Canoe Basketball create a lively finale where communication and quick decisions happen naturally because everyone is trying to keep the game moving.

Learn to Move as One

Before the competitive finish, teams have to coordinate paddling, direction and timing so the boat becomes a shared task rather than six individual efforts.

Build From Basics to Competition

Move from guided paddling and coordination into races, Canoe Polo and Canoe Basketball so the session builds naturally in confidence, speed and shared decision-making.

Ways To Take Part

There’s more than one way to take part

You don’t have to do everything to be part of everything.

Many Reboot Active experiences offer different ways to contribute, support, observe and participate, so individuals can choose an appropriate level of involvement.

Captain

Take the lead for a stretch: steer, make the calls and help coordinate the crew. It is a great opportunity for quieter voices or people who do not normally lead at work to step forward, and the role can rotate so different people get a turn.

Engine

If you are not captaining, you can focus on power and rhythm: follow the agreed calls, keep time with the rest of the crew and turn the team's decisions into movement. It is a simple role, but the boat makes it very obvious when the engines are not working together.

Crew Media

Nominate a crew member to capture some of the action from the water. A phone can be carried at the owner's risk in a waterproof case attached to the buoyancy aid, giving the team genuine photos and video from inside the experience — while still staying part of the crew.

Game Participant

The games create even more ways to contribute. In ball games and team challenges you might paddle, catch, throw, defend or combine several roles, so different strengths can matter once the crews are moving confidently.

Crew

Everyone in the boat is part of the crew. Paddling together is what makes the craft move well; when timing slips, the boat immediately shows it. Crew members listen, communicate, adjust and help keep the whole team moving in the same direction.

Passenger

If an injury, disability, fatigue or another reason means paddling is not right for you, the exceptionally stable catamaran setup can often allow one, and sometimes two, people to ride with their crew and experience the session first-hand without needing to paddle throughout.

Shore Leave Media

Prefer not to get in a boat? You can still join the team for the briefing, see everyone set off and follow the session from the harbourside where practical, capturing photos, video and plenty of the laughs as the crews take on the water.

Perfect For .  . .

Catamaran Canoeing is our first-choice outdoor Start Activity when a client wants something genuinely shared, adventurous and broadly inclusive without beginning with a highly technical individual challenge. We have used it successfully with mixed groups across ages, abilities and personalities, including participants with disabilities; specific access needs still need an advance conversation so we can confirm the right setup.

It works particularly well for away days, team celebrations, graduate or onboarding groups, established teams wanting a fresh shared experience and organisations that want broad participation rather than an activity where only the most confident or physically capable people feel central.

The session can stay predominantly social and fun, or provide a foundation for light-touch development around communication, leadership, trust, shared rhythm and decision-making. For many teams, this is the outdoor activity we would suggest starting with.

Team Value

What this experience can create opportunities for

Catamaran Canoeing gives teams a practical coordination challenge on a shared craft. Progress depends on people working out how to paddle together, listen to instructions, adjust timing and communicate when the boat is not doing what they expected. Because the group is literally moving in the same direction, the effects of coordination — or lack of it — become immediately visible.

The harbour journey adds continuity rather than presenting a string of disconnected exercises. Teams learn the basics, become more comfortable on the craft, then can progress into races, Canoe Polo or Canoe Basketball where faster decisions and friendly competition add a different kind of pressure.

For a development-led session, those moments can create useful opportunities to notice communication, shared rhythm, confidence, decision-making and how a team adapts after a poor start or missed instruction. For a social session, the same structure simply creates a memorable shared experience with plenty of interaction and laughter.

What it can Reveal

What people may naturally notice while doing it

Catamaran Canoeing can be useful for teams that want to explore coordination and communication in a setting where no one person can make the craft work alone. The boat responds to the combined actions of the people in it, so timing, listening and clear calls matter.

That can create simple reflection points around how a group gets aligned, what happens when different people are acting on different assumptions, and how quickly the team notices and adjusts when the result is not what it intended.

The transition from learning the craft to races and games can also make changes in behaviour visible: some people become more vocal under competition, others focus on control or encouragement, and teams may need to decide when speed is helping and when it is making coordination worse.
