Raft Building

Design It. Build It. Test It. Try Not to Fall In.

Creative. Collaborative. Competitive. Hilarious.

A hands-on team challenge where groups design and build a raft from barrels, wooden poles and rope, then put it to the ultimate test on the water. With flexible team roles, adjustable coaching and races, games and raft basketball, it combines problem-solving, practical teamwork and laugh-out-loud moments.

The Experience

Raft Building starts with a pile of barrels, wooden poles and rope and one simple challenge: turn it into something that floats.

Before anyone gets wet, the real teamwork begins. Teams explore different designs, weigh up the pros and cons, divide roles, learn knots and lashings, move and hold equipment, listen, explain, question, build, test and rework. The session can be run at different “jeopardy” levels — meaning how much coaching and information the team receives during the build — from minimal instructor input through to a much more closely coached experience.

Then comes the moment of truth: the infamous shake test, the launch and the challenge of actually getting everyone onto the raft. Once afloat, teams can take on spin races, relays, balance and swapping challenges and a fiercely contested game of raft basketball. Sometimes getting onto the raft — or keeping it together — is as entertaining as the competition itself.

And crucially, not everyone has to go on the water. Raft Building creates space for different contributions, from design and problem-solving to knot work, kit handling, observation, photography, video and shore-side support. There is more than one way to be part of the team.

The Reboot Difference

You may recognise the activity. What we do is different.

Choose How Much Help You Get

The build can be highly supported or deliberately less certain. Adjusting how much information and coaching the team receives changes the challenge without changing the equipment.

Build. Test. Adapt.

The raft gives immediate feedback. Designs can be questioned, knots retied and weak sections rebuilt before the launch reveals how well the collective decisions actually worked.

Earn the Chaos

The design and build create the investment; the launch, races, balance challenges and raft basketball provide the payoff. The fun means more because the team built what it is using.

More Than One Way to Matter

Not everyone has to be on the raft to be part of the result. Design, knots, problem-solving, kit handling, observation, media and shore-side support all create legitimate ways to contribute.

Let Different Strengths Surface

The activity naturally creates room for designers, knot-learners, questioners, practical organisers, leaders and quiet problem-solvers — not one fixed idea of who is ‘good’ at team building.

Ways To Take Part

There’s more than one way to take part

You don’t have to do everything to be part of everything.

Many Reboot Active experiences offer different ways to contribute, support, observe and participate, so individuals can choose an appropriate level of involvement.

Raft Crew

Join the on-water crew to launch, board and test the raft, then take part in the races, games and challenges that follow.

Problem-Solve & Adapt

Look for weaknesses, question whether the build will work, test ideas and help the team change or rebuild anything that does not meet the mark.

Learn & Tie the Knots

Learn the knots and lashings, recreate them on the raft and help secure the barrels, poles and structure together.

Capture the Experience

Photograph or film the build, launch, races and inevitable comedy so the team has the moments to relive afterwards.

Design & Create

Help shape the raft before the build begins: explore ideas, compare design options and turn the team's thinking into a practical plan.

Listen, Observe & Question

Help the team make sense of different ideas by listening carefully, observing what is happening and asking the questions that move the build forward.

Move & Hold the Kit

Help position barrels and wooden poles, steady components and support teammates while the raft comes together.

Watch, Cheer & Be Part of It

Stay shore-side, follow the competition, encourage the teams and be part of the shared experience without having to go on the raft or into the water.

Perfect For .  . .

Raft Building is ideal for teams looking for a creative shared challenge with plenty of laughter, practical problem-solving and friendly competition. It works particularly well when you want an activity where different personalities, skills and energy levels can all contribute in meaningful ways.

The adjustable coaching format also means the experience can be shaped around the team. Some groups may want a highly supported, fun-focused build; others may prefer fewer answers, more uncertainty and a stronger test of communication, leadership and decision-making.

Team Value

What this experience can create opportunities for

Raft Building brings many familiar elements of teamwork into one visible, practical challenge. Teams have to turn ideas into action, communicate clearly, divide responsibilities, listen to different viewpoints, learn new skills, solve problems and decide when the build is good enough to test.

Because the team creates a real physical outcome, decisions have consequences that everyone can see. Designs can be tested, questioned and changed; knots can be retied; weak sections can be rebuilt. The launch then gives the team immediate feedback on how well their collective effort has worked.

The experience can create useful opportunities to notice leadership, collaboration, role allocation, quality standards and how a group responds when something needs changing. Those moments can remain simply part of the fun or, where relevant, become useful material for a wider team-development conversation.

What it can Reveal

What people may naturally notice while doing it

Raft Building can be particularly relevant for teams exploring communication, collaboration, leadership, decision-making and problem-solving. The build naturally creates moments where people need to describe ideas clearly, listen and question, work through different design opinions and move from discussion into action.

It can also make less obvious contributions visible. One person may lead the design, another may master the knots, another may spot a weakness, keep asking the useful question, hold the structure together or quietly keep the team moving. The activity creates opportunities to notice how different roles contribute to a shared result.

What To Expect

  • Welcome, safety briefing and introduction to the challenge

  • Choose the build support level: high, medium or low “jeopardy” depending on how much instructor input the team wants

  • Design, discussion and planning

  • Learn and practise the knots and lashings needed for the build

  • Build the raft using barrels, wooden poles and rope

  • Test, assess and rebuild where needed — including the infamous shake test

  • Launch the rafts and get the crew aboard

  • Spin races, relay races and other on-water challenges

  • Optional balance and raft-swapping challenges where appropriate

  • Raft basketball finale, often with a sudden-death golden-goal finish

  • Disembark, deconstruct the rafts and return the equipment as a team

  • Photos, video clips and plenty to laugh about afterwards

Practical Information

  • Outdoor, water-based activity

  • Typical duration: 2.5–3 hours

  • Teams of 4–6 participants; up to 6 teams

  • Barrels, wooden poles and ropes are provided

  • No previous raft-building experience is required

  • Not everyone has to go on the raft or into the water; there are multiple land-based and support roles

  • The build can be run with high, medium or low “jeopardy”, referring to the amount of instructor guidance available during the task

  • Specific on-water games and challenges may be adapted to the delivery location, group and conditions
